Sumitas is now 5 out of 5 after winning the German 2000 Guineas equivalent
Mehl-Muelhens-Rennen. It was the first time he was challenged at all,
however the danger didn´t come from highly-rated British invaders Berlioz,
Bahamian Bandit or Tissifer but the winningmost 2-y-o of last season,
Gonlargo, who finished strongly. Sumitas gave the connections of Tiger Hill
(jockey Andreas Suborics, trainer Peter Schiergen and owner Georg von
Ullmann) another victory at their local track of Cologne after Tiger Hill
won the Group 2 Gerling-Preis the week before. Sumitas was 14:10 favourite
and remains one of the hottest early favourites for the German Derby in
recent times. He cost 500.000 DM as a yearling, German auction record for a
colt.
