German filly Nagoya wins Oaks d´Italia in course
record time Leggera finishes fifth out of five
on seasonal debut Flamingo Road beats classic winner
Rose of Zollern in German Oaks Acambaro springs
lands shock victory in Grosser Müller-Brot-Preis

Nagoya (ridden by Fernando Jovine), a filly owned and
bred by Gestüt Röttgen, won the Group I Oaks d`Italia
because she had no entry for the German Oaks - Preis der Diana
(Group II). This classic was won by Flamingo Road, who
remained unbeaten in three races this year. (view
the result) Flamingo Road, being a half sister to top stayer
Flamingo Paradise, in the final stages outstayed Rose of
Zollern, winner of the German 1000 Guineas (Henkel-Rennen),
who failed to stay the 11-furlong trip, but nevertheless proved
her class. Evil Empire finished third as she had done in the
season´s first classic race - the odd thing about her
performance being the fact that she was ridden by Manfred
Hofer, a winner of more than 1200 races, who made a comeback
as an amateur jockey after several years of retirement. Flamingo
Road, trained by Andreas Schütz and ridden by stable jockey
Andrasch Starke, is a live prospect for the German Derby on
July 4.
Acambaro gave Rose of Zollern´s connections Peter Rau
and Torsten Mundry a consolation when winning the 10 furlong
Derby trial Großer Müller-Brot-Preis at Munich the
day after the German Oaks. The son of champion filly Arastou
beat three Andreas Schütz-trained horses and Peter Schiergen-trained
Imperioso and will be aimed at the German Derby, too, as his
pedigree suggests he might stay the trip.

Sumitas remains unbeaten after classic Mehl-Mülhens-Rennen
Elle Danzig second in Rome to Central Park
Stallions Sasuru and Royal Solo suffer fatal accidents
Noble Pearl unplaced in French classic Kentucky
Derby winner Charismatic wins Preakness Stakes

Sumitas is now 5 out of 5 after winning the German
2000 Guineas equivalent Mehl-Muelhens-Rennen (view
the result). It was the first time he was challenged at
all, however the danger didn´t come from highly-rated
British invaders Berlioz, Bahamian Bandit or Tissifer but
the winningmost 2-y-o of last season, Gonlargo, who finished
strongly. Sumitas gave the connections of Tiger Hill (jockey
Andreas Suborics, trainer Peter Schiergen and owner Georg
von Ullmann) another victory at their local track of Cologne
after Tiger Hill won the Group 2 Gerling-Preis the week before.
Sumitas was 14:10 favourite and remains one of the hottest
early favourites for the German Derby in recent times. He
cost 500.000 DM as a yearling, German auction record for a
colt.
Stallions Sasuru and Royal Solo met with fatal
accidents. Sasuru, a first-season-stallion
at Gestüt Rheinberg, broke his pelvis in a fall when
he escaped from being led to the stable and gallopped away
on the street. Royal Solo was kicked by a broodmare while
covering and had to be put down due to intestinal bleeding.
The half brother of Dashing Blade was stabled at Gestüt
Hof Iserneichen.
