Nach all dem Ärger der Schock: Nicht der Favorit Tie The Knot ist vorn, sondern ausgerechnet Taufan´s Melody, der mit Halsvorsprung die (noch größere Außenseiterin) Lisa´s Game schlägt. Ratlosigkeit rundum, nicht nur der erste Europäer, sondern "das erste nicht zugelassene Pferd, das den Caulfield Cup gewinnt":

Finding the 66/1 winner was easy ................... everybody had mentioned it in the last five days !! What I want to know is how the hell you selected the 100/1 runner up ?

However I would NOT have backed an eight year old grade 'B' handicapper in a group 1 race .................... even in Oz. Perhaps we'll send over a decent horse next year !!

This Oz racing is far too clever for me ....................

Schlimmer noch: Auch nach dem Rennen geht es um Regeln, Strafen, internationales Recht. Denn Jockey Ray Cochrane hat auf Taufan´s Melody so krass die Spur gewechselt, daß zwei Konkurrenten fast aufgenommen werden mußten, die dann Fünfter (Champagne) und Sechster (Jezabeel) wurden. Cochrane hat Glück gehabt: in Europa wäre Taufan´s Melody disqualifiziert worden, in Australien ist das nicht die Regel. Relegation heißt das, wenn ein Pferd zurückgesetzt wird, und es kommt äußerst selten vor.

Cochrane erhielt dennoch eine saftige Strafe: einen Monat Lizenzentzug (also weder Melbourne Cup noch Breeder´s Cup) und gut 20.000 DM Geldstrafe, was er selbst als angemessen bezeichnete, obwohl es mehr als die Hälfte seines Gewinnanteils sein dürfte. "Ich werde nicht in Berufung gehen. Wozu? Ich bin schuldig", sagte er. Dieser Reitstil hat ihm keine Fans eingebracht, sondern die Diskussion, ob disqualifiziert werden sollte, wieder richtig angeheizt:

A one month suspension was VERY light treatment for a rider that behaved in such a dangerous manner.

I don't think it's relevant if Jezabeel would've won or not - in my opinion if you ride like a cowboy you should be sent back to last.  That's how relegation rules work and I'd love to see them come into force in Australia racing.

I agree with those who were impressed with the way Lady Herrries conducted herself. She may look like Hyacinth Bucket but she can obviously train a racehorse.

In some way the win by Taufan's Melody in yesterday's Caulfield Cup was, if nothing else, poetic justice after all the hysterical hype over his entry into the race during the last week. It also justifies the VATC committee's decision to exercise their discretionary powers to ensure that this horse took its rightful place in the field.

In retrospect, not only do I think Taufan's Melody a worthy discretionary inclusion, but now a very honourable and meritworthy winner of one of the world's great G1 races.
